The Palace of Congresses, constructed between 1982 and 1986, is a landmark of Albania’s architectural and political history. Originally designed to host congresses for the Labor Party and other organizations of the time, it has since evolved into a versatile venue for cultural, social, and professional events.

Historical Background

The building was designed by a team from the Institute of Public Works, led by architect Klement Kolaneci. It reflects the political and social context of its time, serving as a statement of grandeur and functionality aligned with the ideals of Albania’s socialist regime.

Architectural Features

The Palace of Congresses combines monumental expression with traditional Albanian architectural motifs, creating a structure that is both imposing and culturally resonant.

  • Dimensions and Scale:
    • Length: 70 meters
    • Height: 18–23 meters

These dimensions underscore the building’s monumental character.

  • Main Hall:

The centerpiece of the building is its main hall, which seats 2,100 people. The circular covering of the hall, with a diameter of 54 meters, was a pioneering architectural and engineering achievement in Albania.

  • Additional Halls:

Three smaller halls, with capacities of 150, 280, and 300 seats respectively, provide versatile spaces for a variety of events.

  • Facade Design:

The façade exhibits a blend of monumental and traditional elements. Inspired by the Towers of the North and the characteristic houses of Gjirokastra, it merges socialist-era architecture with Albanian vernacular design traditions.

Functions and Usage

Initially built for political congresses and gatherings, the Palace of Congresses now serves a wide range of functions, including:

  • Conferences and Exhibitions
  • Festivals and Concerts
